Bottomless elevator of death

When I first saw this I thought it was a really great example of Japanese wackyness in engineering and I hoped the sign said something like “Most respectably ensure the hand contact of the rail in all manners of travels, both ascending and descending in order to avoid bodily rapid descent with the possibility of harm/death/beheading.”

It turns out it’s a really great example of real-world optical illusions.
